Driving Question Statement

How can we create a space that encourages personal expression and reflection, particularly within the LGBTQ community, in a way that feels safe, anonymous, and impactful?

Introduction

The "Mirrored Confessional" project was conceived as a creative exploration of anonymity and personal expression within the LGBTQ community. Inspired by the traditional confessional booth, this project aims to offer a modern, reflective space for individuals to share their thoughts, experiences, and confessions in a safe and anonymous manner.

My Background

With a strong background in design and a passion for social justice, I have always been interested in creating spaces that foster openness and understanding. My work has often intersected with themes of identity and expression, making this project a natural extension of my interests and skills.

How I Came to This Project

The inspiration for the "Mirrored Confessional" came from my own experiences and observations within the LGBTQ community. I noticed a lack of spaces where people could share their stories anonymously and felt compelled to create a platform that would address this gap. The confessional format was chosen for its historical association with anonymity and reflection.

The Build of the Booth

The design process involved creating a physical booth with mirrored surfaces. The mirrors serve a dual purpose: they allow users to see themselves as they speak, fostering self-reflection, and they obscure the user's identity from the outside, ensuring anonymity. The booth's interior is equipped with recording equipment to capture audio confessions, which are then transcribed and anonymized for display.

Creation of the Manifesto

Alongside the booth, a manifesto was created to articulate the project's goals and the importance of creating spaces for anonymous expression. The manifesto serves as a guiding document for participants and viewers, highlighting the significance of the project within the broader context of LGBTQ history and activism.

Creation of a Zine: The Holy Bible of Homosexuality

The project also includes a zine titled "The Holy Bible of Homosexuality," which compiles transcriptions of the confessions, accompanied by artwork and commentary. The zine serves as a tangible artifact of the project, providing a lasting record of the shared stories and the emotional resonance of the confessions.

Conclusion

The "Mirrored Confessional" project has been a powerful exploration of identity, anonymity, and expression within the LGBTQ community. By providing a safe space for confessions, the project not only offers participants a chance for self-reflection but also fosters a deeper understanding and empathy among viewers. The project's various components—the booth, manifesto, and zine—work together to create a multifaceted and impactful experience.
